Soho Tour

Coffee bars and cubs of the 50's

By David Marks

Just been on an excellent walking tour of Soho visiting the sites of some of the coffee bars I visited in the 50's. Couldn't claim to be a fan of rock &roll but I had belonged to Chris Barbers Jazz Club at the White Hart in Southall and (briefly) got to know Lonnie Donegan. The thing that is bothering me now is that I was sure that the church of St Annes in Wardour Street had a club in the crypt and for some reason the Club Tahiti keeps springing to mind . I am sure I remember the neon sign outside ... or is this a figment of an aged imagination. Can anyone put me out of my misery please !

I think you're correct about Club Tahiti being at St Annes, The Student’s Guide to London (1956) reveals that young visitors to the city enjoyed Club Tahiti on Shaftesbury Avenue http://www.historyextra.com/article/animals/brief-history-london-tourism
